New 'Stealth' Cameras Catching Offenders on the Road

  • Posted

More and more police forces across the UK are trialling ‘stealth’ cameras which use Artificial Intelligence (AI) to automatically detect motorists who are not wearing a seatbelt or who are using their mobile phones whilst driving. The use of such cameras significantly increases the likelihood of a person being caught offending on the road. If this has happened to you, we are here to help.

At J D Spicer Zeb, we know your driving licence is highly important to you and we want to do everything we can to ensure that you stay on the road. We have seen first-hand how losing your licence can affect your employment, your home and your relationships. We are a long-established solicitors’ firm with a team of lawyers who are highly experienced in motoring law.

Convictions for motoring offences have the potential to result in devastating consequences, even more so when excellent legal support is not acquired from the outset. The severity of offences such as not wearing a seatbelt or using a mobile phone whilst driving should not be understated – any investigation by the police or prosecution at court can have instant ramifications for both your home and work life.

We fully understand the daunting nature of facing a motoring offence charge and thus we make it our mission to be there for you whenever you need it, whether that be through immediate legal advice, or reassurance and support. We boast solicitors with the highest level of expertise who can each help you to secure the best outcome possible in your case.

New ‘Stealth’ Cameras: What you Need to Know

If you have received a postal requisition for a motoring or driving offence caught by new technology, or have heard about the new ‘stealth’ cameras in action, you may be questioning how it all works.

What is a ‘Stealth’ Camera?

A ‘stealth’ camera is a piece of technology which was first launched back in 2021 to help police to spot motorists who are driving whilst using their mobile phones, and motorists who are not wearing seatbelts. However, the use of this modern technology is on the rise, with numerous police forces trialling ‘stealth’ cameras in areas up and down the UK.

Rather than just using one fixed camera to catch motorists (e.g. speed cameras), a ‘stealth’ camera can be mounted to a vehicle or trailer and uses multiple different cameras. This allows for the capturing of images which, once processed, can give police a full picture of the people and contents of a vehicle. As such, the police are able to see who is wearing a seatbelt, and whether the driver is using a mobile phone.

Are ‘Stealth’ Cameras Effective?

‘Stealth’ cameras are extremely effective, and trials in different areas of the UK have been highly successful. In 2022, during a test period in Devon and Cornwall, ‘stealth’ cameras detected 590 seatbelt offences, and 45 offences involving mobile phones, over a trial lasting just 15 days.

After images are processed, they are each reviewed by humans prior to conviction to ensure that the elements of the relevant offence are all present. However, the cameras make it far easier to capture a high number of offenders in a short period of time.

How can we help?

Common questions

We always work with the most experienced and best leading UK barristers, KCs (Kings Counsel). We cover all criminal cases 24/7 at the police station and court. Offices in London, Birmingham, and Manchester cover cases across England and Wales. We can offer Legal Aid and affordable Private fee agreements. We can see you the same day, including virtually. Our Senior Partners supervise all of our cases.

How quickly do you respond?

We respond quickly even during out of hours. We do not get our work by paying for online adverts but based on the fact that few criminal law firms can match our 45 years of experience. Most of our cases are still from word-of-mouth recommendations from satisfied clients. We are called daily by dissatisfied clients from firms with less experience than us. We respond very quickly to new enquiries. We know what clients seek and so we update clients rapidly.

Can you get cases dropped?

Yes, read about the recent cases we've helped our clients with here.

We always keep you updated and give straightforward advice. We will get cases dropped early where the case is weak or should not be prosecuted. We will be upfront with you about where you can benefit from a good result with an early guilty plea, such as a discount on your sentence. As we work on cases across all levels with clients from all walks of life, we are excellent at giving clear, spot-on advice. As an established firm, we can allocate a whole team to your case often at short notice to secure evidence to minimise the damage to you.

Have you won any awards?

OUR PROFESSIONAL BODY THE LAW SOCIETY AWARDED US IN OCTOBER 2020 WITH THE EXCELLENCE IN CLIENT SERVICE AWARD AND STATED -

"JD Spicer Zeb demonstrated a clear commitment to client service through their work with vulnerable and diverse individuals in what can be severely traumatic circumstances".
