Not Guilty Common assault Willesden Court 2023

We acted for a client accused of common assault by beating of a restaurant owner. Our client was charged following a large-scale disturbance that lead to multiple calls to the police. The alleged victim narrowly avoided being crushed to death by a passing bus during the fight. We were only appointed by the court to conduct the cross-examination of the witnesses in order to prevent the defendant from undertaking this directly by asking the victim and witness questions. Umar Zeb is a specialist advocate and he discredited the victim's account in relation to the negative CCTV that was given to the police. Umar Zeb asserted that positive CCTV footage existed and that had not been disclosed to the police. After the defendant gave evidence on his acting in self defence and pointed to contradictory accounts, the court found the defendant not guilty. This was a case that would have attracted 6 months imprisonment on conviction.
